Translation

I am a translator working in English, German and Polish. At the moment I am translating  Axel Weipert’s The Second Revolution: The Council Movement in Berlin 1919-20 from German into English. The book will be published by Brill in 2021. Please read the crowdfunding appeal for this important project here and consider donating.

My latest work includes a translation of Manuel Kellner’s political biography of Ernest Mandel, Against Capitalism and Bureaucracy, from German into English (to be published by Brill in 2022), as well as translations of journal articles and conference reports from 1920s Germany for Darya Dyakonova and Mike Taber’s book, The Communist Women’s Movement, 1920-22, to be published as part of the Historical Materialism Book Series by Brill in 2022, followed by a paperback by Haymarket.

My translation of Ewa Czerwińska-Schupp’s political biography Otto Bauer (1881-1938): Thinker and Politician, was published by Brill in 2016 and by Haymarket in the US in 2017.

“This work depicts Otto Bauer as the main politician of the SDAP and attempts a critical-analytical interpretation of his socio-political theories, which are shown against the background of the debates within the First and Second Internationals, political events within the SDAP, the international workers’ movement, and the socio-historical processes in Austria and Europe at the time. The book emphasises Bauer’s analyses, philosophical and historiosophical arguments, his theories of imperialism and the national question, his deliberations on possible ways to socialism, the war question and fascism, as well as his political activity. Otto Bauer (1881-1938) is also a treatise of the ideological, intellectual, cultural and political movement shaped by Bauer: Austromarxism”.

The original text was published in Polish as Filozof i demokrata. Studium myśli społeczno-politycznej Otto Bauera (1881–1938) by University of Łódz Publishing House in 1998.

An expanded German translation, Otto Bauer: Studien zur sozial-politischen Philosophie, was published by Peter Lang GmbH in 2005. My task was to translate the original Polish text into English while also incorporating revisions from the expanded German version. Moreover, I integrated more recent updates from the author into my translation to bring her work in line with the latest historical research.

Together with Ben Lewis, I co-translated Karl Kautsky’s influential 1898 article series, Ältere und neuere Kolonialpolitik (Old and new colonial policies). Karl Kautsky on Colonialism was published by November Publications in 2013 and is the first ever English translation of Kautsky’s text. It features a critical introduction by Mike Macnair.

“The approach of the majority of the left on imperialism is drawn from Lenin’s ‘Imperialism, the highest stage of capitalism’ and the conclusions drawn from this by the Communist International: i.e. unequivocal hostility to imperialist wars and critical support for nationalism in the subordinated countries, even where this takes unattractive forms, like Ba’athism or Islamism. A small minority has criticised this line as anti-democratic or even pro-fascist, arguing either for support for the “War on terror” or for non-opposition to it.

Both sides of this argument rest on a myth: that in the past there was a non-imperialist capitalism. The origins of this myth can be traced back to Karl Kautsky’s 1898 articles on colonialism. This book publishes these with an introduction exploring the articles and their legacy”.

When working as a Content Editor for Ominfone Ltd from 2009-2013, I wrote music news, reviews and promotional texts in both German and English for multiple music streaming services powered by Sony Ericsson, such as PlayNow plus and Sony Music Unlimited (examples 1 and 2). I was also in charge of composing all of Sony’s German-language advertisements and announcements to customers, and I translated contracts, legal agreements and manuals for our clients.

I have translated international news features for the German news monthly Hintergrund – for instance, Naomi Wolf’s ‘How the FBI coordinated the crackdown on Occupy’, originally published in the Guardian. My translation of Alex Demirovic’s ‘Radical Democracy and Socialism’ was published in the periodical Socialist Register in 2017. Some of my translations of shorter historical texts have been published on the Verso Books blog – see e.g. Ernst Jünger’s 1930 review of Leon Trotsky’s My Life here, or Ernst Niekisch’s recollections of Ernst Toller here.
